Naval Postgraduate School Herman Hall | Monterey Wedding Photographer | Thomas & Jennifer

We never would have imagined there was a real life secret garden, hidden just behind these military walls. Monterey is known for its military training schools, and there are a lot of building throughout the area that have limited or no access to the public, the Naval Postgraduate School being one of them. A place we pass every day, never before entering the full security guarded gate, was now one of our future wedding venues! Excited, getting only a small glimpse from what we could find on Google, the history of this venue just amazed us!
Before World War II, one of the finest luxury hotels in North America, the Hotel Del Monte, occupied the present site of the Naval Postgraduate School. Del Monte became known as a place where guests could enjoy playing golf, polo, tennis, swimming, yachting, and deep-sea fishing. Coined “the most elegant seaside resort in the world,” the hotel played host to world leaders, dignitaries, American presidents, film stars and famous artists until 1942, when it was taken over by the U.S. Navy. A huge piece of history lay behind this wall, and to our surprise, all began when the facility in Annapolis became inadequate for the naval future needs. Annapolis! One of the cities our new brand was modeled from. The nautical city we visited only a few short weeks ago, that inspired us, as we walked the steps of their historic buildings, watched the sailboats from their harbors, and the sunsets on what seemed to be the most magical bay. Knowing one time years and years ago, my grandfather, Rachel’s great-grandfather, was here before as he joined the Navy. Talk about history!
Now you know the personal history why we were extremely excited for Jennifer and Thomas’s wedding! Who would have imagined it would turn out to be one of our favorite weddings venues of all time, lying right amidst our hometown! Our day started at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Hotel, with the gorgeous views of the Del Monte Golf Course. The suite was filled with bridesmaids, laughter, and excitement. Jennifer’s day was finally here, and she was one of the most stunning brides we had ever seen!
Arriving to the Naval Postgraduate School in a beautiful vintage car, we rounding the corner to what today is known as Herman Hall. Steps and pillars made their way to huge wooden doorways, green gardens stretched as long as the eyes could see, and a prominent flag pole standing tall, proudly waiving the United States and Naval flags. As the car pulled into the roundabout, the railings were wrapped in lush green garland, and stairway lined with pillar candles. Jennifer slowly emerged from the car, like a scene from a classic movie, with so much elegance and grace.
We led her to the rose garden, where we had Thomas tucked away. These two shared the most heartfelt first look, then hand in hand, we walked the venue grounds, capturing their love story that would be told for generations. As Rachel and I entered the grand ballroom, we were in awe. Cathedral ceilings, windows and doors nearly just as tall, the room was lined with antique chandeliers, curtains drawn by nautical ropes, and gorgeous hand painted Spanish wall tiles made for a stunning ceremony backdrop. How could this amazingly gorgeous historic building, sit less than 10 minutes from our front door? What an absolute dream!
Jennifer and Thomas, the time we spent with you two will never be forgotten! You two have such an unspoken love for each other. Such kindness and compassion, style and sophistication, just radiates. We were absolutely honored to capture your wedding day!
