Choosing what to wear to your portrait session doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. In fact, it’s one of the best ways to elevate your photos from “cute” to completely frame-worthy. Whether you’re planning family photos in Charleston, an engagement session downtown, a maternity shoot under the oaks, or updated branding portraits, the right wardrobe creates cohesion, confidence, and that polished-but-natural look we all love.
As Charleston portrait photographers, we guide our clients through styling all the time — and we promise, you don’t need a closet full of new clothes. You just need intention.
Let’s break it down.

If you remember one thing, let it be this: coordinating > matching.
Gone are the days of everyone in white shirts and jeans. Instead, think of your group’s wardrobe as a color palette. Choose 3–5 complementary tones and build from there.
For Charleston portrait sessions, some of our favorite color palettes include:
If we’re shooting under mossy oaks, earthy tones photograph beautifully. For beach sessions, softer neutrals and coastal blues shine. Downtown Charleston? Pastels and soft pops of color look stunning against historic homes.
Pro tip: Choose one “anchor” outfit first (usually mom’s dress — because let’s be honest, if she feels amazing, everything works better). Then build everyone else around that.

Patterns add dimension and personality — when used intentionally.
The key is balance.
If one person wears a bold pattern, keep the others in solid colors pulled from it. Florals, subtle stripes, small-scale prints, and delicate patterns photograph beautifully. Oversized graphics, loud logos, and neon colors? Not so much.
Here’s a simple formula:
And avoid everyone wearing the same pattern. (We love a theme. We don’t love visual chaos.)

Texture is what makes images feel rich and layered instead of flat.
Think:
In Charleston, lightweight fabrics are your best friend. They move beautifully in the breeze and photograph softly in natural light.
Adding layers — like a cardigan, light jacket, scarf, or even rolling sleeves — adds depth and gives you subtle variety without a full outfit change.

If you feel stiff, your photos will look stiff.
Flowy dresses photograph beautifully because they create movement. Structured pieces can look polished, but make sure you can sit, walk, and hug comfortably.
For family portrait sessions, especially, choose outfits that allow kids to move naturally. We want real laughs and cuddles — not constant outfit adjustments.
And shoes matter. If we’re walking downtown Charleston or through a field, opt for practical footwear that still fits your look. (You can always bring cute shoes for a few stationary shots.)

Accessories bring personality into your portrait session.
Consider:
Flowers, in particular, can add softness and romance — especially for maternity sessions, engagement photos, or anniversary portraits. A simple bouquet from a local Charleston florist can completely elevate your look.
For families, even something small — like a baby’s bonnet, a bow, or suspenders — can add charm without overwhelming the image.
Keep accessories intentional and not overly busy. The goal is enhancement, not distraction.

What you wear should complement your session location — not compete with it.
For example:
When in doubt, we’re always happy to review outfit photos before your session. A quick mirror selfie can save a lot of second-guessing.

To keep your portrait session looking timeless:
Timeless beats trendy every time.
Confidence.
When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s authenticity. Coordinated colors, thoughtful textures, balanced patterns, and a few intentional details go a long way.
And remember — our job as photographers is to guide you, pose you naturally, and help you feel completely at ease. Your job? Show up, trust the process, and maybe twirl that dress once or twice.
If you’re planning a portrait session in Charleston and want help styling your wardrobe, we’ve got you. From curated color palettes to location-specific recommendations, we make the process simple and stress-free.
Because great photos don’t just happen — they’re thoughtfully planned (with a little magic mixed in).
